
In November 1620, the pilgrims to what is now the United States in a small cargo ship across the Atlantic ocean,the Mayflower.The winter was very cold. As a result, the pilgrims died as a before the summer came.Their food was almost gone.
Luckily, in 1621, an Abnaki Indian from Maine,walked into the Pilgrim is village shower them how to catch fish and clams, showed them where to hunt for deer,and showed how to plant corn, (a new food for these Europeans).
In the fall, they filled basket with vegetables,and more baskets with corn .The pilgrims were happy and decided on special day give thanks .The Indians joined them and they ate turkey, venison, clam, fish, corn break, cranberry sauce, and many food and vegetables. "Thanksgiving", as they called it, became a tradition, and when president Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday.
