St.Patrick`s day by Amrinder Kang

St.Patrick`s day is an Irish festival. The day is a national holiday of Ireland: it is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland. It is also a public holiday in Montserrat. In Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, Argentina and New Zealand, it is widely celebrated but is not an official holiday.St. Patrick's feast day was placed on the universal liturgical calendar in the Catholic Church due to the influence of the Waterford born Franciscan scholar.

Luke Wadding in the early part of 17Th century although the feast day was celebrated in the local Irish church from a much earlier date. St. Patrick's Day is a Holiday obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland. The feast day usually falls during Lent; if it falls on a Friday of Lent, the obligation to abstain from eating meat does not bind as St.Patrick's day in Ireland is a first class feast, thus removing the obligation to fast or abstain. The church calendar avoids the observance of saints' feasts during certain solemnities, moving the saint's day to a time outside those periods.St. Patrick's Day is very occasionally affected by this requirement. though when 17Th march falls during holy week as in 1940 when st Patrick's day was observed on 15Th march.st Patrick's day will not fall in holy week again until 2160 when it will fall Monday before Easter

President`s day by amrinder kang

Presidents day honors two of our greatest presidents. But some people call it Washington's birthday. but presidents day is not the official name of the Holiday. As the first federal holiday to honor an American citizen, the holiday was celebrated on Washington's actual birthday, February 22.On 1 January 1971, the federal holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.This date places it between February 15 and 21, which makes the name "Washington's Birthday" a misnomer, since it never lands on Washington's actual birthday. February 22.

A draft of the Uniform Holidays Bill of 1968 would have renamed the holiday to Presidents' Day to honor the birthdays of both Washington and Lincoln, but this proposal failed in committee and the bill as voted on and signed into law on 28 June 1968, kept the name Washington's Birthday. The first attempt to create a Presidents Day occurred in 1951 when the "President's Day National Committee" was formed by Harold Stonebridge Fischer of Compton, California, who became its National Executive Director for the next two decades.

The purpose was not to honor any particular President, but to honor the office of the Presidency. it was first thought that March 4, the original inauguration day, should be deemed Presidents Day. However, the bill recognizing the March 4th date was stalled in the Senate Judiciary Committee which had authority over national holidays. That committee felt that, because of its proximity to Lincoln's and Washington Birthdays, three holidays so close together would be trouble.

Valentine's day by Hoang Pham

Valentine's day

Valetine's day is is an annual holiday held on February 14 celebrating love. The holiday is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine and was established by PopGelasius I in 496 AD . They presenting flower, card or chocolate made hand to express their love to their lover

The history of Valentine's day

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. And one other legend is while in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl. Before his death, he wrote her letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today.

Why did they choose February 14th for Valentine's day ?

Because Roman women welcomed being touched with the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. They choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.DLater, during the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February — Valentine's Day — should be a day for romance.

Mardi Grass By: J Alexander Perez "Mr,sancho"

The origins of Mardi Gras can be traced to Medieval Europe, though we have no written record of how that really transformed into the current Mardi Gras of today. But the origins of the Mardi Gras we celebrate today -- with Kings, Mardi Gras colors, and brass bands -- are traced to New Orleans.
Although we can trace its history to the Romans, a French-Canadian explorer, Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville, landed on a plot of ground 60 miles directly south of New Orleans in 1699 and called it "Pointe due Mardi Gras." He also established "Fort Louis de la Louisiane" (which is now Mobile) in 1702. In 1703, the tiny settlement of Fort Louis de la Mobile celebrated the very first Mardi Gras.Although we can trace its history to the Romans, a French-Canadian explorer, Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville, landed on a plot of ground 60 miles directly south of New Orleans in 1699 and called it "Pointe due Mardi Gras." Valentine's Day by Le Chi Pham

Saint Valentine's Day ( shortened to Valentine's Day) is an annual Holiday held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. The holiday is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine and was established by pope Gelasius in 496 AD. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards

The History of Valentine' s Day is in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14Th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Roman also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15Th, began the Feast of Lupercalia

Another theory about Valentine's Day doesn't begin with the Romans but with Norse. The Normans has a St. Galantin, which meant " lover of women" Now the "G" is not pronounced like a " Gah" om tje English language. It is pronounced like a "V" and so the word is like " Valentine" in sound. And so they believe that their St. Galantin's day is part of the confusion over St. Valentine's Day today

Valentine`s day by Amrinder Kang

February 14 is a special day for honoring sweethearts. this custom is very old. it may go back to Roman times. when a special festival called Lupercalia was held on February 15. On that day all young girls put their names in a box each young boy drew a name for their sweetheart for next year.

During the middle ages February 14 was the date when people believed birds found their mate. The day was set aside to honor all lovers. the people found new ways of celebrating this day.they used to kiss the first young women they saw that day by chance, this special festival came on St. Valentines day. This day honors a Christian saint named Valentine. But the idea of honoring sweethearts has nothing to do with saint.

In the nineteenth century the custom began of sending Valentines began. Valentines cards are pretty decorated cards that are sent to the people you care about. Today Valentines is very popular. people usually send Valentines to many friends and relatives, not just to one person.
